distribution.Seethe sidebar "Finding Desktop Themes" for information on how to get additional desktop themes.Finding Desktop ThemesNew desktop themes for GNOME/Sawfish are available from the sawfish.themes.org Web site.To select anddownload a Sawfish desktop theme, do the following:1.Make sure that the Sawfish themes directory is available for downloading the themes.You can useeither of the following two directories:/usr/share/sawfish/themes or $HOME/.sawfish/themes.Use the first directory if you want any user on your Red Hat Linux system to be able to use the theme.Use the second directory if you want the theme available only for your own use.2.Go to the following Web site: http://sawfish.themes.org/.(To search for themes other than the ones listed on the main Sawfish themes page, go to the Sawfishthemes search page.Click the Themes link from the main page or go directly tosawfish.themes.org/themes.phtml.)3.Click any theme that looks interesting from those available at sawfish.themes.org.You can selectfrom a list of themes that were most downloaded today and those that have been downloaded mostover time.You can also choose themes that have recently been added.4.On the page that appears describing the theme, select the Download link.You will be prompted againto download the theme.5.Click Download.You are asked to select a location to which to download the file.6.Type the path to either of the Sawfish themes directories noted in Step 1.The theme file isdownloaded to that directory.(You can close the browser for the moment.)7.Go to the Sawfish themes directory and unzip the file.For example, to unzip a theme calledWhatever.tar.gz, you would type the following from a Terminal window: cd/usr/share/sawfish/themes and then tar xvfz Whatever.tar.gz.At this point, the desktop theme is ready to be used."Window Manager The list of available window managers appears when you select WindowManager from the Control Center.Currently, sawfish is the default window manager with GNOME.If you want to try other window managers, however, here are a few that are compatible withGNOME:f&Enlightenmentf&Twmf&Window MakerTo change window manager properties for Sawfish, click Sawfish and select Run Configuration Tool forSawfish.You can change dozens of window manager features from the window that appears.Selecting a default editorIf GNOME needs to open a file in a text editor, by default it will use the emacs editor.If you want to changethat, you can do so using the GNOME Default selection under Document Handlers from the Control Center.To make the change, click the down arrow under GNOME editor.Then select from among more than a dozendifferent text editors.Note Although several of the text editors available are mentioned in this book, the vi editor is the only onethat is described in a full tutorial.A graphical editor, such as gEdit, may be easier for you if you are notused to nongraphical text editors.Configuring MIME typesBy assigning MIME types and file extensions to particular types of data files, you can assign how those typesof data are handled when the file is opened from GNOME (such as in the File Manager window).This can bea very powerful feature.It enables you to identify which application is started to handle a file that you open.Click the File Types and Programs selection from the Control Center.You will see a list of MIME Types andfile extensions.You can change which application is used to open a particular file type by clicking the MIMEtype/extension that represents it and selecting Edit.For example, the PostScript file type (eps and psextensions) is handled by the GhostView application (gv).To add your own MIME type and file extension, click Add and fill in the MIME type and extension.You canalso add regular expressions (strings of text and optional wildcards) to identify the files you want to match.After you have added that information, click OK.Then, with the entry still selected, click Edit to add actionsthat are taken for the MIME type/file extension.Exiting GNOMEWhen you are done with your work, you can either log out from your current session or shut down yourcomputer completely.To exit from GNOME, do the following:1.Open the GNOME main menu.2.Select Log out from the Main menu.A pop-up window should appear, asking if you want to Logout,Halt, or Reboot.Tip At this point, you can also select to save your session by clicking Save current setup.This is agreat way to have the applications that you use all the time restart the next time you log in.Makesure you save your data before you exit, however.Most applications do not yet support thedata-saving feature.3.Select Logout from the pop-up menu.This will log you out and return you to either the graphicallogin screen or to your shell login prompt
